Being the incredibly introverted human being that I am, working behind the scenes has been a dream come true. I used to work at a big retail company and let me just tell you: many, many anxiety attacks, along with sessions of hiding in the corner folding towels, had taken place there. Needless to say my calling is far from being a “front man.” A 19-or-so year old, just out of High School who gets to work from home. I personally think God opened some doors to a pretty sweet deal for my occupation. Within this job, I am constantly learning new techniques and growing in my creative abilities, and get to adapt the unique brand of each client. Sometimes I feel as though I pick up the slack of others and even consider myself a safety net of a sort at times, which is something I can confidently say that I simultaneously love and hate about my job
There is so much GOOD in working behind the scenes, however, sometimes it’s hard when there’s no one to pick up YOUR slack. Who’s there to help when YOU are feeling overwhelmed? Who’s there when life happens and you HAVE to step away from your duties? No one, because you’re THAT person for OTHER people. It’s easy to “go go go” when you’re behind the scenes, but when your whole life revolves around being a “yes man” (10/10 movie by the way), you feel burnt out.
My mom has recently been feeling the weight of working behind the scenes. Yes, it’s our job to help our clients succeed and do whatever we can do to get them to the next level in their nonprofit organization or business. No my mom's Asana board IS NOT equivalent to Mary Poppins’ magical endless, bottomless bag of goodness. She has limits. Everyone does. Including people who work behind the scenes.
So here’s some encouragement for those of you who work as "the man or woman behind the curtain,” and to all of you who feel like you just can’t catch a break; those of you who feel as though no one has your back because you’re too busy having everyone else’s:
God is working for you behind the scenes. You may not see everything He does, you may feel like He doesn’t hear you when you’re struggling, but He is working on your behalf; working out the details you never thought of, aligning doors to be opened for you. He has your back and He is cheering you on through the chaos. He opens and closes doors, you may not recognize these opportunities as part of God’s ultimate plan for your life. But He knows every detail of your past and future, He knows what decisions you’re going to make, He knows what you need at all times.

Maybe you wrote the book on "how to succeed at doing everyone else's work for half the price and zero credit", but I feel like God knows, more than anyone else, what it feels like to work behind the scenes and not get enough recognition. Like when people credit the universe for their “good fortune” for example, when in reality: God is the one who’s hard at work, planning everything out from the minor to the major details of your life.

So next time you feel the weight of working behind the scenes, remember that you can always run to God. You can always fall back on Him in the midst of your stress and anxiety. You may go through seasons where it feels like you need to take on everything for yourself, where it feels like God isn’t there to hear you struggling. But He hears you and He knows your heart’s desires. He’s working behind the scenes in your life, all you have to do is turn to Him and open your eyes.
My challenge for you | If you’re the “front man” or “face of the operation,” would you encourage your “behind the scenes” team who’s hard at work, making your dreams become a reality? Remind them of their value and compliment their skills. They need to hear it once in a while.
